The Indoor Air 2024 Conference, held from July 7-11, 2024, marks the 18th International Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality & Climate (ISIAQ). ISIAQ, an international, independent, multidisciplinary, scientific, non-profit organization, is dedicated to fostering healthy, comfortable, and productive indoor environments. This year’s conference promises a holistic view on Indoor Air Science, featuring over 400 speakers who will present their research on indoor air quality, the built environment, and health. The conference’s motto, “Sustaining the Indoor Air Revolution: Raise Your Impact,” underscores the importance of these discussions.

As a proud member of ISIAQ since 2020 (through Allergy Standards Ltd), the iAIR Institute is eagerly anticipating participating in this year’s conference. We are particularly excited about the presentation by our Principal, Dr. John McKeon, which is scheduled for Monday.

The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened global awareness of the importance of indoor air quality. The measures taken to reduce viral transmission have also led to other benefits, improving indoor spaces in general. It is crucial that we sustain these improvements on a global scale. One of the main challenges facing the indoor air community is to leverage the momentum gained during the pandemic to continue advancing the Indoor Air Revolution. This year’s conference theme reflects this need for ongoing improvements in indoor air science and practical implementation in our buildings.

The conference aims to achieve several key objectives:

    • Gain insights into Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) from experts across various sectors, including industry, academia, healthcare, and government.
    • Engage in discussions about the latest advancements in IAQ, from technological innovations to sustainability strategies.
    • Network with other attendees and collaborate on promoting healthier indoor environments.
    • Participate in a diverse range of activities, including plenaries, workshops, and technical sessions.

The conference will address emerging challenges with a multidisciplinary approach, combining science and practical outcomes to improve the health and welfare of the population. This holistic perspective is especially important as we continue to navigate the complexities of infectious disease control and indoor air quality.

Dr. John McKeon’s presentation, titled “Evaluation of Air Cleaning Technologies for ASHRAE 241 Compliance via Performance and Safety Testing,” is a highlight of the conference. Co-authored by Gráinne Cunniffe, Ph.D., Principal Investigator with iAIR Institute, Angela Southey, Ph.D., Dr. John Ryan, and Dr. John McKeon, the paper focuses on the critical need for rigorous and reliable evaluation of air cleaning technologies to control the spread of infectious pathogens and improve indoor air quality.

ASHRAE Standard 241 emphasizes the importance of clean air, considering both outdoor air and air cleaned by various technologies to achieve target levels of equivalent clean airflow (ECAi) in indoor spaces. The research conducted by the iAIR Institute, in collaboration with established third-party laboratories such as airmid healthgroup ltd., highlights the necessity of standardized testing to ensure the efficacy and safety of air cleaning technologies in mitigating the spread of airborne infectious aerosols.

The product tested in this study was the Air Sniper Induct 300W/300W CC. We extend our gratitude to Stuart Henley for commissioning this testing on behalf of Air Sniper and permitting the sharing of the test data.

As we look forward to the Indoor Air 2024 Conference, the iAIR Institute remains committed to advancing the science of indoor air quality and fostering environments that promote health and well-being. We are excited to engage with fellow researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to continue driving the Indoor Air Revolution forward.
