Evaluation of Air Cleaning Technologies for ASHRAE 241 Compliance
via Performance and Safety Testing

Background

  • Rigorous and reliable evaluation of the ability of air cleaning technologies to control the spread of infectious pathogens is essential for maintaining or improving indoor air quality.
  • ASHRAE Standard 2411 recognizes the importance of clean air, counting both outdoor air and air cleaned by numerous technologies towards achieving target levels of equivalent clean airflow (ECAi) across various indoor spaces.
  • Strict testing conditions and parameters are required to ensure both performance and safety of devices undergoing testing. Normative Appendix A1 outlines the testing procedure, utilising the MS2 bacteriophage to determine air cleaning system effectiveness, and assessing formaldehyde, ozone, particulate testing and noise for safety.
